unwritten rule of airship battles by alphabethater unwritten rule of airship battles by alphabethater
I really don`t know why I put so much effort into this idea but here it is.

:giggle: Awesome :D :XD: They do tend to shoot too much at the ship itself rather than the balloon in that movie :giggle:

Which is funny, because there were military tactics about crippling enemy ships by destroying their sails. Maybe it's to avoid having a giant airship falling to the ground in one piece?

maybe it's just because real airships have really small gondolas which is kinda hard to hit. you talking about cepelins, right?

Zeppelins, yeah. Then again, if they are zeppelins, and they're filled with hydrogen, and covered in the same compound the Hindenburg had… then not much would end up hitting the ground. :B

Zeppelins are more durable than are given credit. Artillary shells will punch straight through without detonating, leaving relatively small holes which can be patched. Also, they have mutable gasbags. There have been cases of zeppelins losing most of its lifting gas and still flying. Even incendiaries aren't as effective as one might think. Also, so far as I know, most Zeppelins were filled with helium, only the German ships had hydrogen, as the Germans had no real helium supplies.

Well, I kinda was being a bit silly with my response. A properly designed zeppelin would be fairly safe, though still not perfect (see the Macon). Hindenberg was just a really unlucky bird.

Fff, awesome. XD (Most naval commanders would rather just board the enemy vessel and/or detonate them from the inside out to save their own ammunition) :B

Cap/n has a nice design too. ♫

It's an interesting idea. I suppose if real, a hole in the balloon wouldn't be enough to destroy the ship, just force it to land.
I imagine a wily captain would bear distance in mind as well as altitude.

I imagine some pirate captain going all crazy about losing that fight and just shoot on the air balloon.
while the schip's falling down you can hear some people yelling 'you cheat !!'

not really a teamplayer ;)

All but the smallest (and perhaps shoddiest) of real airships use multiple chambers within the bag; imagine thousands of balloons within a a single leak or penetration wouldn't deflate the entire thing, and in most cases wouldn't actually deplete all that much.

Funny notion tho!

this is clearly exaggeration, but seriously do you think it stands against cannonball ball hit or couple of them? wouldn't it lose too much of it mass to hold ship in the air after that? basically the point is that balloon seems to be really vulnerable in airship battles. I`m not saying that you are wrong, it`s posible, but we need to do some serious calculation to prove it)

Actually he's correct a bullet or cannon ball wouldn't do that much damage and the gas bags are so much bigger then the gondolas that the gas escaping wouldn't bring it down for many miles . There were German airships in WWI shot up by airplanes over England that made it all the way back to their home fields in Germany . It was when the Brits started using tracer bullets that the German airships were screwed . Regardless I thought the cartoon was really funny , thanks for sharing it .

em... no they not "so much bigger then the gondolas" real one maybe, but not steampunk ones. airships traditionalyportrayed with balloon only a little bit bigger than gondolas (probably because that way they look more interesting:) )
Actually you think that he is correct but who the fuck knows really) are there any cases of zeppelins being struck by cannon ball or some type of artillery gun from ww1 or ww2?
I`m glad you like this artwork, thank you.

Anyone one who has even the smallest knowlege about airships knows . The information is not a secret and it is something that did happen . Anything steampunk can be done , it just takes more then glueing some gears on something . On the other hand if you want to make something otherwise impossible , just " invent " some new science that makes it sound possible .

no, It`s you who using rhetoric, I ask you a question- are there any cases of zeppelins being struck by cannon ball or some type of artillery gun from ww1 or ww2? I havent find any, but you seem to be so confident that it can only be your way, just give me one example and I change my mind.

very true, though this is something i dont have to worry about because the airships in my steampunk series dont have air balloons. (well, none floating above them, at least. the big things that obviously need them, like the Valkyrie and Jericho, have them contained in the metal framework of the ship itself) =D
